The key to finding and being awarded a scholarship is diligence! Consider all the places you should be searching and asking. Start the process by identifying local, state, and national sources of scholarships. Finding local sources of college scholarships starts with your high school guidance counselor.
Your guidance counselor is contacted by universities across the country with information about scholarships and other opportunities for eligible students. Make sure you counselor is aware of your career interests and your search for scholarships. Locally you should also consider places you or your family members have worked, often local companies provide scholarships for employees or the children of employees. Your place of worship can also be a good local source. Other local sources include The Rotary and Kiwanis, which nation-wide provides millions of scholarship dollars to deserving student each year.
Note that this is not an exhaustive list of local sources, keep your eyes open and make sure you let people know you are looking for money for college; word of mouth is always a good thing when looking for scholarship opportunities. State and National sources of scholarship information is available through a number of online databases. You should not have to pay for this information, consult with your high school guidance counselor if you are having difficulty finding scholarship information from your state’s department of education and from federally available scholarship sources. You should contact the director of financial aid to learn more about their procedures for allocating scholarship dollars. You should also consider factors that make you stand out as a student; there are some rather unusual scholarships out there! There’s a number of scholarships for students going into specific career-paths or students with a specific physical characteristic (for example, there’s a scholarship for left-handed students at one college campus!), and other rather unusual eligibility requirements. Do a little brain-storming and consider how you might find one of these scholarships, as well! No matter your background or academic record, with persistence you should be able to find a scholarship to fund some of your college education.
